Spray foam insulation is easily and quickly applied, it provides unrivalled levels of airtightness, produces low uValues and high R Values.
Commercial & Residential Insulation Solutions
The spray foam insulation used to insulate residential properties is open cell spray foam insulation. It produces unrivalled levels of airtightness, low uValues, high R values and is breathable allowing water vapour to escape preventing damp and mould.
Closed cell spray foam insulation is the foam insulation used to insulate metal or concrete surfaces. This makes it ideal insulating sheds, barns and containers.
Why is using spray foam insulation for both residential and commercial insulation applications so popular in Ireland?
Spray Foam Insulation Solutions
Up to 50% of heatloss in your home is via the attic or roof. Applying spray foam insulation between your rafter produces high levels of thermal efficiency and airtightness.
Spray foam is ideal solution for insulating your floors, it is very easily applied getting into all the hard to reach areas producing great thermal and sound insulation.
When access to your attic is restricted you can insulate directly under the slates on your roof. The foam can be sprayed between the rafters from the roof but under the roofing felt.
Shed insulated with closed cell spray foam are an ideal insulator and can be applied on any metal or concrete surface, strengthening the structure and preventing condensation.
Containers are used to ship goods, as storage areas and to live and work in. Insulating them with spray foam is the best way to prevent condensation and control the temperature.

When applying open cell spray foam insulation in an attic or roof it is important to remember to use a breathable vent card to allow water vapour to escape.
The cards need to be placed 50mm from the roofing felt creating an air gap, the foam is then applied on the breathable vent card. This prevents damp and mold buildup and allows your structure to breathe.
The main differences are in how the foams are used. Open cell is used in roofs, attics, floors and walls. He insulation needs to breath so open cells are open and the foam when applied expands to over 200 times its size. The foam is airtight yet because the cells are open water vapour is able to escape the foam is then said to be breathable.
Closed cell spray foam is used in commercial and industrial applications, it can be applied on any concrete of metal surface so it is widely used on farms and warehouses. Its cells are closed and don’t allow water to escape, it does not expand in the same way as open cell and it hardens after application. It prevents heat loss and strengthens the structure its applied to.
The cost of spray foam insulation depends on the application, attic, farm shed etc, the size of the area to be insulated, the cost of the labour, travel minus the governemnt grant if applicable.
Yes closed cell spray foam insulation does add structural strength. Closed cell spray foam’s rigid structure can increase the surface’s strength substantially while providing a air and water barrier preventing condensation on metal surfaces and providing an excellent thermal barrier prevent heat loss.
Open cell pray foam insulation if not properly applied can be dangerous but if applied by a certified contractor who obeys building regulations there should be no problem. Make sure you ask your contractor if they are using breathable vent cars most commonly in attics.
If not applied, then building regulations requirement that a 50mm air gap be maintained between insulation material and roofing felt to not be met and could result in damp and mold. The vent card allows the escaping water vapour to escape.
Over time the money saved from using any type of insulation will save some money so yes it is worth it. While open cell spray foam is a little more expensive that some other options it prevent more heat loss saving you more money.
